About OffGrid Advisors

I didn't discover off-grid living. I grew up in it.

From the age of three, I lived without mains power. Kerosene lamps, candlelight baths, a car battery for what little electricity we needed at night, and a dolphin torch in the dunny. Our food came from the land — we raised our own meat, grew vegetables, and made the most of what we had. Riding 30 kilometres into town was just a normal Tuesday. That was just life.

Back then, solar wasn't even an option. We used what we had and made it work.

Fast forward to today and everything has changed. A full off-grid setup is still a serious undertaking — but having something that keeps you ticking when the grid goes down? That's well within reach. Solar panels, battery storage, water filtration, energy-efficient appliances — what once cost a fortune is now accessible to everyday households.

My mother still lives on the same property I grew up on. She now runs everything from a complete solar setup. The same place that once ran on a car battery and a petrol generator.

In between, I've lived on a suburban block — growing food in tight spaces, enough garlic to last the year, and more pumpkins than we knew what to do with. And for the last five years I've lived on a sailboat, completely off-grid. I refitted it myself — wiring, sizing and installing solar panels and batteries, fitting a desalinator so we can make fresh water wherever we are.

I've done this at various scales. As a kid with nothing. As a suburban gardener. As someone living entirely off the ocean and the sun.

Why OffGrid Advisors exists

Comfort can quietly become dependence — and most of us don't notice until something goes wrong. Supply chains, fuel, power grids: these systems work until they don't.

The people who fare best when things get disrupted are the ones who built a little independence before they needed it. Not by stockpiling or going extreme. Just by living a little more deliberately. Using less. Knowing more. Being prepared.

That's what OffGrid Advisors is about. Practical, affordable steps toward being less dependent and more capable — whatever life throws at you.

You don't need a lot of land. You don't need a big budget. You don't need to do it all at once. You just need to start.
